The Tibetan yogi-lineage of Dzogchen Mahayoga was derived from the Eight Great Indian Masters (slop dpon chen po brgyad, astamahacharya), otherwise known as the Eight Knowledge Holders (bka' babs rig 'dzin chen po brgyad, astavidyadhara).
Their place of gathering was the Cool Grove Cremation Ground, Sitavana, near Bodhgaya, in which stood the Blissful Tower Stupa, Deje Tsekpa.
The tradition of hidden treasures asserts that the Dakini Lekyi Wangmo guarded this Stupa and at propitiation by the Eight Vidyadaras she took eight caskets from the Stupa each containing one of the principal sadhanas and dispensed them to the eight great masters:
Manjushrimitra, 'Jam dpal bshes gnyen, Vidyadhara of Body Transmitted Manjushri Kumarabhuta, Yamantaka rDo rje gzhon nu, gShin rje shed, Destroyer of Yama, Nubchen Sangye Yeshe received the transmission through Shantigarbha.
Nagarjunagarbha, kLu sgrub snying po: Vidyadhara of Speech Transmitted Padma Vak, Hayagriva, Padma Sung, Lotus Speech.
Hungchenkara, Humkara, Hung mdzad, Vidyadhara of Mind. Transmitted Yang dag thugs, Vishuddha Immaculate Mind He taught Padmasambhava and Nub Namkhai Nyingpo.
Vimalamitra, Dri med bshes gnyen, Vidyadhara of Qualities. Transmitted bDud rtsi sman (Amrita Medicine) In Tibet he taught Nyak Jnanakumara and others.
Prabhahasti, 'Od kyi glang po, Vidyadhara of Activity. Transmitted Vajrakilaya, rDo rje Phur pa, Dagger-Sceptre He taught Padmasambhava.
Danasanskrita, Nor gyi legs sbyar, Vidyadhara of the Mamo Transmitted Mamo rBod gtong, Elemental Goddesses.
Shantigarbha, Zhi ba'i snying po, Vidyadhara of Fierce Mantra; Transmitted Drag sngags dmöd pa, Mi gyo ba, Fierce Mantra and Curse. In Tibet he taught Nubchen Sangye Yeshe.
Guhyachandra, gSang ba'i zla ba, Rambuguhya Devacandra, Vidyadhara of Worship; Transmitted 'Jig rten mchod bstod, mundane worship.
